Mrs Hunt visits Room 1.
Who is the young teacher fronting the class? This was Miss Hunt who is a trainee teacher, who joined Room 1 for four weeks this term. Its great having teacher trainee in our room. She had lots to share with us and she had a great lunch time craft group just for Room 1 students.

Term 3 Round Up.
Gosh, week 7 already. The term has flown by. There has been many highlights for this term and its been amazing watching the childrens confidence growing. Welcome to Andrei and Byron this term who have joined our class. Its great getting new boys to join our class as we are very female dominant.
Calendar Art is completed now and is displayed in our class room window. The calendars, diaries and cards make great gifts and all of the profits go to the PTA. Don't leave your ordering too late. 11 September is the cut off point, so be in quick.
Speaking of the PTA. This is a very important school community group and it is very short of parent support. Please step forward and assist this group with their work in and around the school. You do not need to attend all of the meetings, but be available to help out with events in and around the school. This year the PTA has provided the new Basketball hoops and boards on the court behind the old tower block. This is a major investment and we would not have them without the PTA fundraising efforts. So come on everyone, get behind the PTA and come along and help out.
The school production, Little Stars, was a huge success and it was great to see the Room 1 children come along in the evenings to enjoy the show. You never know, one of you may be the next Little Star in the next school production.
The school choir performed at Baycourt and were fantastic. We had 8 children from Room 1 in this years choir and it was lovely to see them enjoying this experience. Well done to you all.
The winter sports are almost over. Term 4 will bring new opportunities for our children. Flippa ball and Touch are the main sports offered by the school. If you are interested in playing come and see Mrs James to find out more. Our Facebook Page Tahatai Sport will also give you loads of information and continuous updates about sport and results.

Term 2 Highlights
Term 2 is racing by and it is great to see so many of Room 1 involved in a winter sport for 2013. For many of you it is your first attempt at a team sport, and it is great to hear of so many success's at sharing time.
We started Term 2 with two visits to the Life education van to investigate the effects of food choices on our bodies and how our body process's our food. The digestive system is very interesting for our children and they are fascinated about how their body works. It is pleasing to note how many children are passing back the message to their homes about what food choices are best for school and the packaging that it is contained in. During "Munch and Read", it is a time for sharing our work or Mrs James reads our novel. We have decided that fruit, some cake and sandwiches are the best items to be eaten at this time of day. Packaged items are not suitable.
Our life education booklets are almost completed and will be located in the childrens portfolios for viewing when you are able to visit our room. We are very proud of our work that shows our deeper understanding of the links between healthy eating and what is best for our bodies and minds.
The School Cross Country was a great success and thank you to the weather man for allowing us that one day of brilliant sunshine for the event to take place. Congratulations to Michael Kennedy for his top three placing and Michael will be representing our school at the Mount Cluster Cross Country on Monday, 23 June at Blake Park. Congratulations also to all of the Room 1 children who participated with great passion on the day. I think you are all stars for giving it your best shot.
Many thanks also, to the families who assisted with the ice block sales on the day. This was greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to Katie Earp who placed 4th at the Argos Gymnastic competition. A fine effort Katie.
Room 1 has been a buzz with excitement. We have been investigating how the Honey Bee lives in its natural community and how it effects our food chain. We travelled to Mossops Honey Bee Farm at Tauriko for a very interesting trip. It is fascinating to see a live hive in operation and the children were very interested in the equipment needed for bee keeping and of course the honey tasting. It is well worth dropping by as a family to Mossops on your way past some time to take advantage of the hive room. Many of the Room 1 children have expressed an interest in returing with their families during family time, which is a very high accolade for the trip. Thumbs up to the parents who provided transport.
We are beginning our health topic of Keeping Ourselves Safe this week. The homework for the following two weeks with be a booklet that will support this programme. Please take the time to discuss with your child what they have been learning at school about KOS. It covers a range of material from knowing your address and contact number, to home and school rules for safety.
Whānau Assembly is in Week 8, Friday the 28 June. We have an action packed line up for you but don't forget our Grandparents Celebration Assembly on Monday, 8 July. If a grandparent is not available, then a special friend may also be invitited to support your child. A shared morning tea will be provided by all children. This can be delivered to the class to have at morning tea time with the guests in the classroom. This children are excited to share their learning with a wider audience and it is great fun too.

Pūkeko Whānau Overnight Experience
We have just had the most amazing overnight stay at Mount Maunganui Holiday park. For many of us it was our first night away from home, to walk around the Mount, to swim in Pilot Bay, to go rock climbing, to swim at the hot pools and to walk up the Mount. We are all champions.
We had a fab team of parents that joined us for the two days and night stay. They helped us to achieve all of our goals and we can't wait to share our next trip away with them again.
To all of the families that were unable to join us, you can all be very proud of your children. They were a pleasure to take away and they are very proud of what they have achieved.
Take some time to enjoy our camp photos and stay tuned to our published work which will follow shortly.

Art Display
I have just posted all of our self portraits that we have completed. They are hanging in the class so feel free to come and look at your childs work either before or after school.
Week 5 Term 1
Room 1 Round Up!
Week 5 has been another very hot week temperature wise and its great to see all the children bringing drinks of water to school each day. For our new parents, the childrens drink bottles may be placed on a tray at the door way for children to source whenever they need during their learning.
Munch and Read
Each day from 10.00pm to 10.10pm we have munch and read where the children are encouraged to eat fruit or healthy snacks. It has been really pleasing to see families taking responsibility for the elimination of commercial packaging from school lunches. The children have been learning the importance of recycling and how much waste rubbish comes from our school lunch boxes. It is truely alarming. Some food items that should be avoided are yogurts which don't keep particularly well and some items like fruit strings. The children tend to use this food as a toy which is not very hygenic.
This week we have completed our testing and we have been working towards our overnight experience. The children are really excited about this. Please get those forms back to us as soon as possible. Catering and final organisation does not want to be left to the final minute. While the farmers of the country are praying for rain, we are saying "Long may the weather stay hot and dry".
Homework Stars
Great stuff to all those children completing their homework. Even if not finished I would still like it handed in on the Friday to maintain good routines. As special mention for a top effort this week would go to Katie, Maaka, and Ruby for awesome ideas and great organisation.
Winter Sport Organisation
Information for Hockey and Netball will go home with your child this Thursday, 28 February. To avoid disappointment return the forms to the sports box as soon as possible. We will be taking names of children who would like to play Miniball ( Basketball) so that registrations can be organised for this code as well.
Some new dates to remember
Year 4 Girls Self Defense - Friday 15 March. This is for the girls only and for one day only. Alison Pike is a visitor to the school who leads this programme. Its great fun and the girls think they are marvellous.
Funky Fun - This is for Pūkeko Whānau. Our day is Thursday 11 April, hosted at the Tect Arena. Keep this day free. We will need transport and parent help. Its a great relaxing day of low key team sport where the emphasis is on fun and participation. Cost approx $7.00.
If you need to contact me, please feel free to do so.
Kind regards
Charlotte James
